Yonge Street Singers Gear up for Cross Canada Youth Chorus
An exciting new program has been announced which is designed to bring the first Canadian youth chorus to the Midwinter Barbershop Convention in Tampa, Florida on January 29 - 31, 2010. Barbershoppers in a number of provinces are actively involved in making this happen.
Jordan Travis, tenor of International quartet competitor Chameleon, Director of Hamilton Harbourtown Sound, and Assistant Director of Toronto Northern Lights has agreed to serve as Director of the group.
We are looking for young men who are self motivated and are ready, willing and able to participate in this event. The Society in the past, and we expect in the future, will cover a great deal of the cost in terms of hotel
rooms and registrations. While participants will be largely responsible for the remaining costs for transportation and meals, we hope that sponsorships from Barbershop chapters and other interested parties will assist in defraying some of these other costs.
Age eligibility is 14 up to 30 years (on the date of the convention). Eligible young men in Ontario will be required to attend only two or three scheduled rehearsals prior to the assembly of the entire group from acrossCanada - in Tampa.
The first meeting/rehearsal for Ontario will be held on the afternoon of Saturday November 21, 2009 starting at 1:00 pm. The specific location is yet to be determined but it will be in Toronto, and will be announced shortly. The tentative plan is to start at 1:00 and run to about 5:00 pm. At that time those who need to leave are free to do so, but we may also arrange a pizza dinner for those who wish to stay on. A contribution to the
costs of the meal will be requested of those who wish to stay. To get access to the music which Jordan has selectes and the learning recordings, contact Bob Gibson. Please let us know if you have any problems with accessing the music or the learning tracks. Thanks to Rick Ackerman of Toronto Northern Lights for making the music available on his website. You should come to the rehearsal on November 21 prepared to sing all three of the posted songs (with the music if necessary). You are strongly encouraged to spread the word about this group to other young men (friends, relatives, fellow students, co-workers, etc.) who are age eligible singers. The success of the group will be a direct function of the number of singers who are on stage in Tampa, and we really would like to make a splash with a decent sized group. We will also be communicating further with Ontario District Barbershoppers, Sweet Adelines and Harmony Incorporated members to help spread the word further.
Please contact Jordan Travis at jordan.travis@gmail.com or 905 634 7650 if you have any questions about the musical program - including any questions about which voice part you should learn. Please contact Bob Gibson at bgibson@northernlightschorus.com or 416 751-0946 if you have any questions about logistics or administration.
Note that attendance at this first rehearsal does not represent or require any firm commitment on your part to participate in the trip to the Mid-Winter Convention, but only an interest in considering attending. Please advise Bob as soon as possible of your intentions regarding attendance at the rehearsal on November 21, and which voice part you sing. Also please keep him posted on any changes in your plans. If you require transportation assistance, let Bob know and we may be able to find a way
help you out.
Spread the word. Hope to see you on the 21st.
Jordan and Bob
